Franchise Advantage: YOU!

What's most important to having a competitive edge for a franchise owner: knowledge, skill, or talent?

Keep in mind, many competitors may have the same traits you do. So, maybe the answer is “none of the above.”

Possessing and maintaining the right attitude gives you the edge over the competition. In many cases, the key to beating the competition and achieving success is mental; reflected in attitude or mental fortitude.

Isn’t this true in other life endeavors? How many times have we seen the underdog player or team win over the more talented opponent? The difference is often attitude; the I will do whatever it takes, legally and ethically, to win, to get more customers, to have a better business than the guy across the street.

Here are a few ‘attitude attributes’ you can put to good use:

1. Passion

Ok, so you don’t jump out of bed in the morning totally excited about cleaning septic tanks, taking care of seniors, or serving up burritos all day. What you should get excited about is that customers are choosing you over the competition. Your business is not so much about the core or chore of what you do, as it is about the delivery of such; with pride, a smile, timely, courteous, friendly, caring, compassionate, and with passion to the total satisfaction of why you are in business in the first place – serving your customers. When you do that, the money follows.

2. Flexibility

It's a given that your daily, weekly, and monthly plans (and strategies) will change as things arise and different situations surface. You are a small business, use flexibility as an inherent advantage over large companies.

3. Decide

Procrastination leads to missed opportunities. Sometimes go with your gut and intuition to make the decision – but make it.

4. Believe

We all know confidence is contagious; with employees, customers, vendors, and just about everyone you have contact with. Believe in yourself. You can do it.

5. Work

This is one of those old-fashioned techniques: beating your competition by outworking them. You might notice your employees will follow your lead.

6. Rebound

There is no perfect franchise to own. They all come with their sets of ups and downs, especially as you build the business. Learn from those setbacks and move on. You can't change the past, so why fret over it.
